Abstract

An aluminium-killed steel is annealed at 1100 -1450 F. in a nitrogen atmosphere containing 5-40% Hz the dew point of which is maintained between 0 F. and +70 F. during the anneal in order to control the nitriding tendency of the steel. The atmosphere may contain minor amounts of other gases such as CO and CO 2 .
