Abstract

A track switching device for the track system of a ground effect machine for selectively connecting a main trunk section 1 to either of two branch sections 2 or 3, which sections 1, 2, 3 each include stationary upright guides 8, comprises a flexible intermediate guide element 6 of hollow structure filled with vibration damping filler material (e.g. sand or rubber) and of substantially identical cross-section to the guides 8 fast with an end portion of the main trunk section 1 and movable by thrusting means e.g. a ram 18 to engage with either of the end portions of the guides 8 of the branch sections 2 or 3. As shown in Figs. 1, 5 the guide element 6 has two side plates 12 spaced by spacers 13 and at one end is connected to the guide 8 of the main trunk section 1 by rivets 7. The free end of element 6 is connected to a base 9 movable in a groove 10 in a horizontal bearer portion 5 extending continuously over the track in which portion 5 vertically movable catches 19 are provided to hold the element 6 in either of its positions. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 7-12 (not shown), the flexible guide element is supported by three carriages having wheels movable in grooves in the bearer portion. The element is movable by a ram and further rams are provided to immobilize the carriages in either operative position of the element. In the further embodiment of Fig. 13 (not shown), the flexible element (6b) includes reinforcing plates which have increasing flexibility from the fast end to the free end thereof.
