Abstract
Fleeces are produced by introducing a bundle of continuous regenerated cellulose filaments in the form of a band or sliver, into a stream of water. The individual filaments have a thickness of from 0.1-10 den and a moisture content at least equal in weight to that of the cellulose content of the filaments. The water flows along a trough 5, the base of which slopes downwardly at 4-15 to the horizontal and is open at the lower end. The bundle of filaments are opened out so that they are distributed over a relatively large area and are substantially parallel to each other. This opening out is also aided by water sprayed onto the filaments from jets or sprays 12-15 which oscillate horizontally and substantially perpendicularly to the direction of travel of the filaments. After a total residence time of 5-60 secs. in the stream of water the filaments are deposited on the screen belt 9 travelling at a lower speed than the filaments thus forming a fleece. Excess moisture is removed, preferably in stages, by suction devices 17 and the fleece is then dried. Bonding agents may be applied by means of the spray unit 18.
