Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the Formula (I) where X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, X1 is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine, and R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different are hydrogen, an optionally substituted aryl, aralkyl, or alkenyl radical, an alkynyl radical or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or organo-substituted ammonium ion. Compounds in which X1 is hydrogen may be prepared by reacting a compound of the Formula (II) with halogen and epoxidizing the product, while those in which X1 is chlorine or bromine are obtained by reacting a compound of Formula (III) with chlorine or bromine and epoxidizing the product. Cis - 1,2 - epoxypropyl phosphonic acid, or a non-toxic salt thereof, may be obtained by reacting a compound of Formula (I) in which X1 is hydrogen with a dehalogenating agent. Cis- 1,2-epoxy propyl phosphonic acid may also be prepared by reacting a trans compound of the Formula (IV) or Formula (V) where Y is chlorine or bromine with an alkali metal borohydride in aqueous medium. Cis-propenyl-1-phosphonic acid may be prepared by reacting di-n-butyl-cis-propenyl phosphonate with concentrated hydrochloric acid. 2-Halo-propenyl- 1 -phosphonic acids may be obtained by reacting the corresponding propenyl-1-phosphonic acid with halogen. 2-Halo-propenyl- 1 -phosphonic acid dichlorides may be prepared by reacting the appropriate 2-halo-propenyl- 1 -phosphonic acid with phosphorus pentachloride. Dibenzyl and diphenyl-2-halo-propenyl-l-phosphonates may be prepared by reacting the appropriate 2-halo-propenyl-phosphonic acid dichloride with benzyl alcohol or phenol.
