Abstract
In apparatus for treating a substance with a gas under pressure, and primarily for agitating, fluidizing and ejecting a powder, a chamber 116 is defined by an outer boundary surface of revolution 108 having a larger and a smaller end, and an inner coaxial conical or frusto-conical boundary surface 110 with its base at the larger end and its apex 111 facing an outlet 17 there is at least one compressed gas inlet 113 at the larger end directed obliquely along one of the boundary surfaces so that the gas stream(s) follow helical paths along the surface. In the embodiment shown, the gas streams follow the outer surface 108 which is ogival, but in another embodiment (see Fig. 1, not shown) the outer surface is cylindrical and conical and the gas streams follow the surface of the inner core the angle of which is preferably 90 . As shown the chamber is secured to a pressurized gas supply fitting 13' by a ring 118, but it may be frictionally mounted on a' plug (13, Fig. 1). Material may be introduced with the chamber 22 before assembly or through suitable apertures (not depicted) or introduced continuously through a tube 120 and bore 119 in the cone. Application described are the treatment of borine mastitis with powdered medicaments (see Division AS) and the bulking, wrapping or dyeing of a textile yarn drawn continuously through the tubes 120, 105 (see Division D1).
