Abstract

A tyre press, e.g. for the retreading of tyres, includes an upper mould part 2 movable downwardly on to a lower mould part 1, a heating bag 18 locatable, when folded double, between cylinders 12, 14 and its edges clamped to the inner one, pressure fluid cylinders 9a, 9b which act on the base of the outer cylinder to raise it to either reject a vulcanized tyre or receive a fresh tyre 46 from a support 45, Fig. 1 in the latter case frictional forces between the bag and cylinders cause the inner cylinder to be raised to a predetermined position in which it is locked before the upper mould part is lowered and the mould closed. With the cylinders 12, 14 in their uppermost positions, Fig. 2, a fresh tyre is received on a seat ring 13 of the outer cylinder, and a flange 26 of a rod 24 depending from the base of the inner cylinder engages a fixed abutment 8, and a locking bolt 28 is passed through a transverse bore in the rod to secure it. An upper seat ring 43 for the tyre is secured to a cylinder 42 and is driven downwardly relative the upper mould part by a fluid cylinder 39, and rods 48a, 48b depending from the cylinder base 41 are brought into abutment with rods 30a, 30b upstanding from the outer cylinder base so that the spacing between the rings 13, 43 is retained during the subsequent lowering of the upper mould part, the tyre, the outer cylinder and the closure of the press. The inner cylinder remains stationary during this action during which the bag impinges the ring 43 and is guided into the tyre cavity, fluid under pressure being fed into the bag via a pipe 29. On opening the press and raising the outer cylinder the heating bag is drawn into the space between the two cylinders the tyre is raised to a height enabling the support 45 to be located beneath it and the bolt 28 is removed from the rod 24 whereupon the cylinders 9a, 9b lower both cylinders 12, 14 to the position of Fig. 1.
