Abstract
In the treatment of ammonium nitrate with an inert gas at 200-337 F., sublimation is inhibited by incorporating 0.04% by volume of ammonia into the said gas. Such treatments may be in the process of cooling or drying ammonium nitrate. In an example ammonium nitrate containing 0.3% water is dried at 277 F. by air containing 0.29% by volume of ammonia. The flow rate may be from 50 to 250 SCFM of gas per lb. of ammonium nitrate. Use of the process is also disclosed in the spheroidization of an ammonium nitrate sulphate fertilizer and in the drying of a nitrophosphate complex fertilizer.
