Abstract

The ground-contacting surface of an excavator chassis normally supported on the ground at one end by a pair of undriven wheels 15 and at the other end by feet 18 can be increased by securing a dish or trough-like shell to each wheel or foot. Preferably, each shell comprises a circular, downwardly curved dish 20 having peripherally spaced, upstanding struts 21. Each strut has at the upper end an inwardly projacting arm 22 carrying a threaded clamping spindle 23 that can be screwed down to bear on a foot 18 to cause the shell to be clamped to the foot. Each shell also has two upstanding parallel plates 25 for embracing the sides of a wheel when a wheel is entered on to the shell. The struts of each of two diametrically opposed pairs of struts are connected by cross-strips following the peripheral curvature of the shell. These cross-strips prevent a wheel embraced by the plates 25 from rolling out of the shell. These shells facilitate sliding of an excavator over the ground and improve the stability of an excavator when it is crossing or descending into a trench.
