Abstract

In a tube-within-a-tube hydraulic pistoncylinder shock absorber of the kind in which the direction of flow between the inner (cylinder) and outer (reservoir) tubes is the same for both directions of piston movement, the one-way circulating flow is controlled by non-return valves 44, 52 in the piston 22 and cylinder end 46 respectively, and damping is achieved by causing the fluid to pass through a passage 58 located in the outer tube. Flow through this passage is restricted by a damping valve 62. In addition to the non-return flow-control valves 44, 52 and the damping valve 62, there are two safety valves 54, 56 which act in the opposite sense to the flow control valves 44, 52 and bypass the latter if the piston is abruptly loaded. The damping valve is adjustable. In Fig. 1, this valve includes a cylindrical element 70 containing a plurality of different size radial bores 72 (only one shown). In Fig. 2 (not shown) an equivalent needle valve is depicted. Both forms of valve may be locally adjustable by means of a screw-driver slot 74 (86) or remotely by mechanical cable or electrically.
