Abstract
A sealing joint for a vacuum treatment enclosure, e.g. for heat treatment of elongate metal articles, comprises a bath of liquid metal 3, divided into two regions by a wall 11 for isolating the interior of the vacuum enclosure from the atmosphere or a region of subatmospheric pressure. A wire 1 to be treated may be guided through the bath 3, e.g. of indium or gallium, possibly heated by electric means 5, by rollers 4, 15 to enter a treatment zone 10. Heating means 12 may preheat the wire 1, while brushes 7 remove adhered bath metal nitrogen, argon, CO 2 &c., may be introduced through a valve 14 to prevent oxidation of the metal 3. A similar sealing joint, Fig. 3 (not shown), may be provided at the exit end of the zone 10. To reduce the pressure difference across the joint, a second joint, e.g. comprising a water bath, may be provided on the atmospheric side of the first, Fig. 4 (not shown), the article 1 passing through a region (23) of intermediate subatmospheric pressure. Vaporization of the water may be avoided by blowing a cold gas (34) into the region (23) and/or circulating the water through a cooler (37).
