An apparatus for selectively separating and crushing organic matter from wastewater or the like for subsequent treatment, apparatus comprising: influent and effluent chambers; in said influent chamber, a drum screen partially submerged in the influent, said drum screen having outlet means for discharging effluent into the effluent chamber; means for rotating said drum screen; rake means normally protruding out of said drum screen outward, to lift the material deposited on said screen and remove it from the effluent; pressing means above the influent level, to restrain the soft material while the screen in its rotation crumbles it; and collecting means applied to the periphery of said drum screen; above the influent level and downstream of said pressing means, to remove undisrupted waste from the rotary screen.
