Abstract
A capacitive network is derived from a parent capacitor consisting of two electrodes or two sets of electrodes, adjacent electrodes being separated by dielectric material and electrodes of opposite polarity being staggered so that they extend to opposite end faces of the capacitor, the network being obtained by making cuts each extending from an end face over at least the whole width of the overlapping zone, but not extending to the other end face. As shown cuts 3 and 5 are made from one end face, cut 4 from the other to give four series-connected capacitors between terminals a and b (see also Fig. 2, not shown) suitable for use as a voltage divider. By making all the cuts from one face a parallel arrangement of capacitors is obtained (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). Resistors, inductors and other components may be connected between the subsidiary capacitors to give more complex networks. In other embodiments (Figs. 5 to 8, not shown) T and # capacitor networks are obtained, or arrangements for use as suppressors (Figs. 9 to 12, not shown). The cuts may be filled with insulating material, e.g. by potting the component. The individual capacitor units formed by making the cuts may themselves comprise an arrangement of seriesconnected capacitors by removing strips of electrode material at right angles to the cuts (Fig. 13, not shown). Alternatively where the electrodes are formed by metallizing the dielectric, unmetallized strips may be left.
