Abstract
Novel 1,2 - diphenyl ethylenediamines of the general formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-8 alkyl group, R1 is a C 1-8 alkyl group, R2 is a halogen atom or a hydroxyl, C 1-8 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy or C 2-8 dialkylamino group and R3 is a halogen atom or a hydroxyl, C 1-8 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy group, are prepared by reduction of a compound of the general formula wherein X is a cyano or C 1-4 alkoxy group and Y is a -NRR1 group, or X and Y together form a =N-R1 group, in an optionally protoncontaining solvent or solvent mixture. Pharmaceutical compositions having inhibitory activity against tumours comprise, as active ingredient, at least one 1,2-diphenyl-ethylenediamine of the first general formula above in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent or carrier, and may be administered orally, parenterally or rectally. Alternatively, anodic reduction may be effected, using magnesium as the electrode material and anhydrous pyridine (containing sodium iodide) as the solvent, at 40 C.
