Abstract

A procedure for dyeing water-swellable cellulosic materials and combinations or mixtures thereof with synthetic materials, in which the size and flexibility of the cellulose material are increased by exposure to water, for a high use of the dye, characterized in that it consists of in: A. Contacting the water-swellable cellulosic material, or its mixtures or combinations, in any order, even simultaneously, at a temperature of 0-225ºC, with (1) water in sufficient quantity to swell the cellulosic material; (2) a colored preformed dye that does not require oxidation, reduction, hydrolysis, or other chemical modification for fixation or color development, in sufficient quantity to color the cellulosic material, a saturated boiling solution of which dye in 0.1 aqueous solution M of sodium carbonate has an optical absorbance of not more than 30, calculated from the optical absorbance determined spectrophotometrically in the solution obtained by diluting the saturated solution 10 times with a 90/10 by volume mixture of triethylene glycol dimethyl ether and water and then cooling at room temperature; and (3) a solvent in an amount sufficient to maintain the swelling of the cellulose if the water is separated and that: (a) has a solubility of at least 2.5% by weight in water at 25ºC, (b) boils above about 150ºC at atmospheric pressure, (c) is a solvent for the dye at some temperature within the range of about 0º to 225ºC and (d) respond to the formula (see formula) or **(See formula)** where n is 0 or 1; m is a positive integer; R is H, C1-8 alkyl, aralkyl or C7-15 alkaryl, (see formula), R2SO2 or **(See formula)** where R2 is C1-8 alkyl, C5-10 cycloalkyl, C7-10 aralkyl or alkaryl, C6 aryl, C10 aryl or furfuryl; R1 is -OH, -OR2, -SR2, -NHR2, -NR2 (C1-8 alkyl), -NR2 (aralkyl or C7-15 alkaryl), (see formula), -OSO2R2, - (see formula), -NH (phenyl) or -NH (naphthyl); X is the number of unmet valencies in A; and A is ROCH2CHORCH2-, -CH2CHORCH2, -CH2CHCH2-CH2C (CH2OR) 3, (-CH2) 2C (CH2OR) 2, (-CH2) 5CCH2OR, (-CH2) 4C, -CH2 (CHOR) andCH2OR, -CH2 (CHOR) yCH2- or -CH2 (CHOR) yz (-CH) zCH2-, where y is 2 is 3 or 4 and z is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 but not greater than u; with the proviso that at some stage during the process, the interior of the swollen cellulose is in contact with a solution of the dye in an aqueous solvent or another solvent.
