Abstract

In a program controlled exchange system markers are functionally specialized in the control they exercise over the same network, one marker of a pair pursuing a co-called pre-test function while the other selects paths and switches them through, either marker being able to take over the duties of the other in the event of a fault. The function pursued by a marker is determined in accordance with a data store which programs its actions. The markers of a pair can operate concurrently in the service of different connections. Each marker is brought into service by applications received over individual demand wires from controlling circuits, the marker scanning the wires to serve demands one-at-a-time. The functions pursued by a marker pair may be exchanged from time-totime or they may be switched in response to date received over a data bus common to the system.
