A method for the treatment of cellulosic materials to convert them into combustion retardants and to communicate greater resistance to tearing, tensile strength and improved fall and softness, the procedure of which is to apply to cellulosic materials an aqueous treatment agent constituted for about 3% to 30% by weight of a crosslinkable polymeric acrylic resin, about 4% to 20% by weight of ammonium bromide, and about 1% to 20% by weight of an organic, aliphatic, water soluble nitrogenous compound and weakly basic, containing an amino group, and subject cellulosic materials to drying to remove excess water.
