Abstract

Casting apparatus comprises a furnace 1 having a crucible 15 therein, the crucible having a pouring hole 151 in its bottom closable by a stopper 12 a chill mould in at least two parts 23 and 24 mounted on a frame 2 which is pivotable about a horizontal shaft 21 between a pouring position and a mould emptying position a first nozzle fixed on the mould and a second nozzle fixed on the pouring hole of the crucible and capable of co-operating with the first nozzle and a pressure applying device (216) which, when the mould is in the pouring position applies the mould to the second nozzle, and when the mould is in the mould emptying position holds the mould in that position. The pressure applying device (216) may be a piston and cylinder unit having the piston-rod attached to the frame 2 and the cylinder pivoted on the frame 10. The mould and frame 2 are moved from one position to the other by a rack 214 and pinion 213, and the mould halves 23 and 24 moved apart and together by a piston and cylinder unit (248) acting through a knuckle joint. Several mould and frame assemblies 2 may be provided around the crucible, and each mould may comprise a fixed part and several movable parts.
