Abstract

Procedure for converting gaseous mixtures containing carbon monoxide and water vapor to hydrogen and carbon dioxide, comprising cooling a synthesis gas containing carbon monoxide and water vapor to approximately 149 to 371ºC, contacting said gas of synthesis with a catalyst in a first stage, cool the effluent from the first stage to 149 to 371ºC, contact said effluent with a catalyst in at least one additional stage, and remove from the final stage a hydrogen-rich effluent gas, the catalyst of each step comprising (a) at least one alkali metal compound, said compound being derived from an acid having an ionization constant less than 1 x 10-3; and (b) a hydrogenation-dehydrogenation component, consisting of at least one element chosen from the group consisting of the elements of groups VB, VI-B and VIII of the periodic table of the elements, the ratio of the metallic component of the group VB, VI-B and VIII and the alkali metal compound of 0.001 to 10 parts by weight of the alkali metal compound.
