Abstract

Nuclear reactor fuel particles are checked for leakage through the coating by testing for radon 222 emitted from radium 226 incorporated with the fuel material. The fuel particles are formed of powdered uranium oxide or carbide bound together with a mixture of radium and aluminium stearates. The fuel is encased in a first layer of pyrolytic carbon to contain fission gas products, and an outer layer of pyrolytic carbon. The testing compacts 10 are mounted within the tubular furnace, used for the carbonization process for forming the pyrolytic carbon layer, and an inert gas is circulated through 11 by the pump 12 and the decay chamber 15. Radon, which escapes from the fuel particles having a faulty pyrolytic carbon coating, duringh eating, decays in 15 and the solid decay products accumulate at the filter 16 and are detected by the alpha particle counter 17.
