Abstract

Magnetic credit card reader has a plurality of parallel coplanar axles carrying card transporting wheels and a magnetic reading head mounted above the wheels, one of the axles carrying two spaced wheels and a further axle carrying one wheel situated directly below the reading head and extending into the space between the two wheels. The reader has a support block 72 having openings 73 in side walls arranged to receive grooved members 74, 75 supporting the axles 47 (only one of which is shown). The axles are rotatable in arms 68a, 68b having a boss 77 at one end receivable in slots 80 in block 72 and receiving rods 79. Beneath block 72 is adjustable situated base member 82 having parallel lateral legs 89 extending downwardly at an acute angle to the top surface of the member. The legs have threaded bores 91 receiving set screws 90 and the member has a threaded bore 84 receiving an adjusting screw passing through a through hole 86 in member 72. The rods 79 are situated in the spaces between legs 89 and may be individually adjusted by set screws 90 or may be adjus ed in common by screw 88. The rods 79 (Fig. 7) are spring loaded to force the wheels upwards against a card 13 so that one wheel presses the card against the reading head 19. The reader may have a further spaced pair of wheels situated on the free side of the one wheel and may have a further wheel situated the further pair. The axles may be driven via belts and sprockets via a motor controlled by a printed circuit arrangement providing external information signals. A card having suitable embossed regions is received in a slot in the reader having an enlarged portion locating and positioning the embossed regions. The card operates a microswitch. A printed circuit board situated above the head is secured to pillars on member 72. The motor can be driven forward or in reverse.
