Abstract

A system for recording information on an amorphous thin film comprising: an electromagnetic energy source; an amorphous film capable of softening in response to the heat produced by the application of said electromagnetic energy; a writing member for applying to selected areas of said film said electromagnetic energy in sufficient quantity to heat said film above a certain threshold temperature causing it to soften and provide a vapor pressure that produces vacuum in it after cooling; a reading organ to detect said selected areas of said film in which said voids reside; and an erasing member for applying energy to said film in sufficient quantity to soften it, although not to raise the respective temperature above said certain threshold temperature, whereby said softened film flows to fill said voids.
