Abstract
An arc discharge device comprising a light-transmitting, hermetically sealed, elongated ampoule, enclosing a predetermined volume, input electrical conductors embedded in said ampoule and electrically connected to electrodes that are operatively spaced a predetermined distance within said ampoule, a metal halide filler that maintains the discharge surrounded by said ampoule, and which includes a small charge of inert ionizable ignition gas and a predetermined amount of mercury, characterized in that mercury, when fully vaporized as the sole maintenance constituent of the discharge is capable of providing a mercury vapor operating pressure of between 3 and 15 atmospheres calculated on the basis of an average mercury vapor temperature of 2000º K, and because the filler further includes at least one of between praseodymium halide, neodymium halide and halide of cerium, excluding fluoride, in a total amount comprised between 1.4 x 10-6 and 5.4 x 10-5 moles-gram/cm of separation between said electrodes; cesium halide, excluding fluoride, in an amount between 3.5 x 10-7 and 5.4 x 10-5 moles-gram/cm of separation between said electrodes; and the molar ratio of said praseodymium halide, neodymium halide and cerium halide to said cesium halide being from 4/1 to 1/2.5.
