Cpds. of gen. formula (I): where R = straight- or branched satd. alkyl(9-17 C, pref. 16-17 C) have therapeutic and cosmetic properties such as sebaceous gland-inhibitory, antiphlogistic, antiprolific, scaling-inhibitory, capillary stabilising, local anaesthetic, skin moisturising activity etc. Prepn. by esterification of 5-pyrrolidone-(2)-carbxylic acid or reactive derivs. with HOR in solvent and with acid-activating agent or also be intramolecular cyclisation of a cpd. of gen. formula (II): where X = hydroxyl, halogen or alkoxy at elevated temp., e., 250 degrees C.
