Abstract
A process for the recovery of valuable amounts of fibers and fillers from wastewater from paper mills, comprising adding to the wastewater containing valuable amounts of fibers and fillers and other impurities at least one swellable layered silicate in swollen condition and at least one macromolecular compound having a substantially fibrillar structure capable of reacting with layered silicate or layered silicates and with the valuable amounts of fibers and charges inherent in wastewater, each of said macromolecular compounds having a molecular weight greater than 800,000 and containing branched chain functional groups, using sufficient quantities of layered silicate and macromolecular compound to reduce the solids content of the treated water to below 25 parts per million, and to separate the formed solid phase and use it as a raw material in papermaking, and recirculate at least part of the water tr tied up as feed water for papermaking or passing treated water to a collector.
