Abstract

A method of electroplating a semi-gloss, sulfur-free nickel plate onto a base metal, comprising passing a current from an anode to a base metal cathode through an acidic aqueous nickel plating solution containing at least one compound nickel that provides nickel ions for electroplating nickel deposition; and, in an amount sufficient to provide improved electroplating deposition characteristics, as a first semi-gloss cooperative additive, the aliphatic aliphatic compound 3-hexin-2,5-diol and as a second semi-gloss additive a compound containing an omegasulfohydrocarbon-di anion -yl-coumarin in which the hydrocarbon-di-yl moiety contains at least 2 carbon atoms and in which the oxymegasulfohydrocarbon-di-yl groups are substituted in the carbocyclic nucleus of the coumarin group.
