A transport container for radioactive material that produces biologically significant radiation including gamma and neutron radiation and with a radiation shielding structure to reduce such radiation to a first specified limit under normal conditions and at a second specified limit greater than said first limit in hypothetical accident conditions, said container comprising: an elongated hollow structural envelope; support means within said envelope for receiving said radioactive material; a first radiation barrier formed by a layer of dense material surrounding said radioactive material within said envelope, the thickness of said dense material being selected to reduce the total biologically significant radiation of said radioactive material to at least said second limit; a relatively thin nonstructural shell surrounding said envelope and supported by it in spaced relation therefrom; and a second radiation barrier formed by a hydrogenated material contained between said shell and said shell, the thickness of said hydrogenated material being sufficient in combination with said dense material to reduce the total biologically significant radiation to at least said first limit.
