Abstract
A method of preparing a hair dye composition, characterized by: a) subject to reduction, carried out in an alkaline aqueous medium or by catalytic hydrogenation in an appropriate organic solvent, an indoaniline of the formula **(See formula)** where the radicals R1 and R2, the same or different, each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or a lower alkyl radical containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, at least one of which is different from a hydrogen atom; R3, R4, R5, R6 and R7, the same or different, each represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl moiety of 1 to 4c optionally substituted with one or more hydroxyl, carbamoyl, piperidinyl or acylamino groups; on the other hand, R3 and R6 or R4 and R7 can form, together with the carbon and nitrogen atoms to which they are attached, a dihydrooxazinic or pyrrolinic heterocycle and Z represents an amino, acylamino or hydroxyl group, to obtain a diphenylamine of formula: **(See formula)** where a and Z have the meaning given above; or else condense a dinitrated derivative of formula: **(See formula)** where R3, R4 and R5 have the meaning given above and X represents a halogen atom, with a para-aminophenol of formula: **(See formula)** where R1 and R2 have the meaning indicated above, in order to obtain a dinitrodiphenylamine which is then reduced with sodium hydrosulfite in alkaline medium or by catalytic hydrogenation, to obtain a diphenylamine of formula: **(See formula)** where R1 to R5 have the meaning given above; b) separating the diphenylamines obtained in a) from the reaction mixture, by filtration after neutralization and/or cooling of the reaction medium or also by concentration followed by filtration after removing the catalyst: c) optionally recrystallizing the separated diphenylamines in b); d) dissolving at least one diphenylamine obtained in b) or in c) in an amount of 0.002 to 2% by weight, in an aqueous or hydroalcoholic solution that may contain other cosmetic ingredients and e) adjusting the pH in a range between 4 and 11 by means of a compatible acidifying or alkalizing agent, used in cosmetics.
