Process for the production of 5-phenyl-1,3,4,4a, 5,9b-hexahydro-2H-indene [1,2-c] pyridines, of general formula Ic, **(See formula)** wherein R1II signifies hydrogen, a lower alkyl or alkenyl radical, and R2 signifies chlorine, bromine, fluorine, or a lower alkyl radical, characterized in that a compound of formula IIId is cyclized. **(See formula)** wherein R1II and R2 have the above meanings, with polyphosphoric acid, and, if desired, mixtures of compounds are separated where the 4a/5 hydrogen atoms are trans and the 4a/9b hydrogen atoms are trans and wherein the 4a/5 hydrogen atoms are trans and the 4a/9b hydrogen atoms are cis in order to isolate one isomer or each of the isomers.
