Abstract
Process for obtaining an anionic sizing agent for paper, soluble or dispersible in aqueous or alkali-aqueous ammonia, characterized in that it comprises forming an aqueous-ammoniacal solution or dispersion, with a concentration of 0.5 to 50% by weight of condensation products of copolymers containing 20 to 80% by weight of maleic acid anhydride, maleic acid or maleic acid half esters with 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group of the ester, and 80 to 20% by weight of styrene or mixtures of styreneacrylonitrile, the proportion of acrylonitrile in the mixture rising to 0.5 to 50% by weight with caprolactam, corresponding to 0.6 unit of maleic acid incorporated, 0.6 to 2 equivalents of caprolactam, and replacing the hydrogen atoms of the imide of the, maleic acid imide copolymer by carboxyalkyl residues containing from 1 to 7 carbon atoms in the alkyl residue.
