Abstract
Title cpds. of formula (I): where A = CH2, CHOH or CO R1 = H or hal, or (if R2 and R3 = H) ME R3 = H) Me R2 = H, hal, CN, NO2, NH2, or (1-4C) NH acyl R3 = H or hal R4 = (1-4C) alkyl and at least one of R1-R3 = H, including salts, esters, and lactones of (I), are of use as anti-phlogistics. (I) are prepd. e.g., A = CO, by condensing a biphenyl with a succinic halide or anhydride and a Lewis acid A = CH2 by reducing I (A = CO or CHOH) and other unsatd. analogues A = CHOH by selective, partial redn. of I(A = CO).
