A method for tanning animal skin, comprising treating such skin with an aqueous tanning bath containing zirconium sulfate and silicated sodium, characterized in that the skin is treated within said bath while maintaining the pH thereof between 1, 0 and 2.5, because said bath contains zirconium sulfate and silicate sodium sufficient to provide at least 2% ZrO2 soluble therein, because it contains sufficient soluble sulfate to provide, in solution, at least four sulfate ions per atom of zirconium in said bath, in addition to the sulfate ions required for the formation of poorly soluble sulfates of other cationic elements present in said skin and/or bath, and because said bath is then neutralized to a pH between 3.0 and 6, 2 approximately.
