Abstract
Improvements introduced in a process for the preparation of methionine precursors from acrolein-cyanohydrin, which comprises reacting acrolein-cyanohydrin, methyl mercaptan and a composition which is a source of ammonia or ammonium ion and source of carbon dioxide or carbonate ion, in presence of an organic solvent, to thereby form methionine precursors containing 5-mh as the main reaction product, characterized in that the acrolein-cyanohydrin, the methylmercaptan and the composition which is a source of ammonia or ammonium ion and source of carbon dioxide or each carbonate ion is used in the form of a liquid phase, continuously introduced under pressure in a reaction zone maintained at a temperature of 40 to 200ºC and above atmospheric pressure, and reacted at said temperature in a homogeneous liquid phase, thus allowing the methionine precursors to be continuously prepared.
