Procedure for obtaining azo dyes, of general formula: ** (See formula) ** where A represents an optionally substituted aryl or heterocyclic radical, B represents the residue of an aclinic coupling component and Z', which is directly attached to a carbon atom of the nuclei in A or B, represents a group of formula : -COXLQ where X represents a direct bond, -0- or -NR- where R represents hydrogen or alkyl, L represents an optionally substituted alkylene, arylene or arylaliphatic radical, and Q represents -COOH, -OCOYOOH or -NR1COYOOOH where R1 represents hydrogen or alkyl, and Y represents a direct bond or an optionally substituted alkylene or arylene radical, said dyes being free from sulfonic acid groups; characterized in that it comprises diazotizing an amine of formula ANH2, and coupling with a coupling component of formula HB, the amine and the coupling component being free from sulfonic acid groups and containing together a -COXLQ group, and in which formulas A, B, X, L and Q are defined as above.
