Abstract

A method for separating components of the hydrocarbon effluent from an alkylation reaction zone in which isobutane is alkylated with an olefinic reactant in the presence of a catalyst, the method comprising the steps of: (a) removing catalyst from said hydrocarbon effluent; (b) introducing said hydrocarbon effluent into a fractionator comprising a higher enrichment section, and a lower fractionating section, said container being maintained at a pressure less than about 15 atmospheres; (c) removing from said upper enrichment section a head fraction comprising isobutane and less than about 50 mole% propane; (d) removing from said fractionator a side cut-off fraction of isobutane comprising less than about 8% by mole of propane, said isobutane fraction being removed as a vapor phase at a site below the site at which said effluent is introduced; (e) removing from said fractionator a substantially pure butane side cutoff fraction below said site into which said isobutane side cutoff fraction is introduced; (f) boiling the hydrocarbon effluent again in said fractionation zone using intermediate reboiler means located in said lower fractionating section; (g) removing from said fractionator a fraction of funds comprising alkylate; (h) condensing at least part of said head fraction to provide a head stream; and (I) introducing at least a portion of said overhead liquid stream into said fractionator at a site above said site into which said effluent is introduced.
