Abstract

Method of preparing a metal substrate coated surface having an adherent coating, thermally cured and resistant to both corrosion and water, and in which, before a next operation, said surface will be in face-to-face contact, without substantial interfacial agglomeration, with a surface capable of withstanding thermal curing conditions, said method including the steps consisting of: (A) applying to the surface of the metal substrate, while free of said interfacial contact, a hexavalent chromium containing thermally curable coating composition, in a liquid medium, a hexavalent chromium providing substance and a reducing agent thereof; (B) volatilizing the liquid from the applied coating composition without curing said coating thus obtaining a coating applied to said substrate in the dry state; (C) bringing the surface of the metallic substrate containing the dry coating into interfacial contact with an opposite surface; and (D) curing the dry coating on the surface at a temperature sufficient to perform said curing, while still maintaining the metal substrate in said state of contact.
