Abstract
A process for the manufacture of a detergent composition containing paraffinsulfonate and inorganic sulfate, which comprises producing a paraffinsulfonic acid or a mixture thereof by a reaction that also produces sulfuric acid and results in sulfur dioxide and free paraffin present in the mixture of acids, neutralize the paraffinsulfonic acid and the accompanying sulfuric acid with an alkali hydroxide or carbonate to produce paraffinsulfonate and inorganic sulfate, raise the temperature of the neutralized mixture, which contains the neutralization water, unreacted paraffin and sulfur dioxide, to a high enough value and keep the mixture at such a temperature for a sufficient time to vaporize the water, the sulfur dioxide and the paraffin, convert the remaining product in such a way that one of its dimensions is small enough so that at elevated temperature, paraffin, carbon dioxide Sulfur and waste water, if any, are separated from the product, solidify the paraffin sulfonate-inorganic sulfate mixture and convert it to a particulate form, mix such mixture with other constituents of a detergent composition such that the mixture thus produced have a high content of solids, and dry such a mixture and convert it into free-flowing particles.
