Abstract
Refinements introduced into a screen panel assembly to extract water from a suspension containing fine granular solids, the assembly comprising a substantially flat screen panel of an elastomeric material that is mounted within a frame and has grooves extending through the full panel thickness, means for tensioning the panel within the frame and means for vibrating the frame and panel, characterized in that the slits in the screen panel are parallel and arranged in rows and are spaced in a direction perpendicular to the slit lengths, with adjacent slits of the same row defining a corresponding diaphragm element, the diaphragm elements abutting one another in intimate facing relationship along the full lengths of the slit lines and presenting a surface of smooth sieving in the free state of the paper, such means being For tensioning the screen panel in the frame the panel is tensioned in directions parallel and perpendicular to the slits, causing, in use, the vibration applied to the panel that the diaphragm elements of the tensioned panel undergo a limited and random pulsing motion which draws water from the suspension as the fine granular solids are transported along the smooth and taut screen surface of the panel.
