Abstract

A process for preparing a chemically bonded, phase separated and chemically bonded, thermoplastic, hydrophilic, graft copolymer comprising the step of copolymerizing: (a) from about 1% to about 95% by weight of a polymerizable hydrophobic macromolecular monomer comprising a linear polymer or copolymer having a molecular weight in the range of from about 5,000 to about 50,000 and having a substantially uniform molecular weight distribution such that its Mw/Mn ratio is less than about 1.1, further characterizing said macromolecular monomer for having no more than one polymerizable moiety by linear chain of polymer or copolymer, said polymerizable moiety being at the end of the chain; and (b) from about 99% to about by weight of at least one copolymerizable hydrophilic comonomer, said copolymerizable hydrophilic comonomers forming the polymeric backbone of said graft copolymer and said copolymerizable hydrophobic macromolecular monomers forming the linear polymeric side chains of said copolymer. grafting, and the linear polymeric side chains of the graft copolymer are copolymerized into the polymer constituting the main chain through the polymerizable end group of said macromolecular monomer, and wherein the main chain is composed of polymerized units of at least one monomer ethyl etherically unsaturated selected from the group consisting of hydroxyalkoxy esters and hydroxyalkoxyalkoxy esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids, N-hydroxyalkoxylamides and N, N-bis-hydroxyalkoxyamides of acrylic and methacrylic acids, vinyl esters of monocarboxylic acids s which become hydrophilic by hydrolysis of said vinyl esters following copolymerization, N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylpiperidone, N-acrynylpyrrolidone, M-acrylpipiperidine, N-acrylmorpholine, quaternary ammonium salts of vinylpyridine, quaternary ammonium salts of dimethylaminoethyl and mixtures thereof; the linear polymeric side chains of the graft copolymer that are copolymerized into the copolymer backbone are separated by at least about 20 uninterrupted repeating monomer units of said backbone constituent polymer; copolymerization and distribution of the side chains along the polymers constituting the main chain being controlled by the relative reactivity proportions of the polymerizable end group existing in said hydrophobic macromolecular monomer and in said copolymerizable hydrophilic comonomer.
