Abstract

Procedure for separating paraxylene from a normally liquid mixture of xylene isomers and C8 aromatics, where the mixture is cooled in a crystallization zone to a temperature just above the paraxylene eutectic, to form a slurry of paraxylene crystals in the liquor mother of crystallization and the paraxylene crystals are separated from the mother liquor to recover the paraxylene product; characterized in that it comprises passing said slurry into a continuous feeding, multi-zone centrifugal separator unit, which has means for the entry of washing liquid in an intermediate zone; gravitationally separating a substantial portion of the mother liquor from the grout, in a first zone, to form a porous paraxylene cake having mother liquor occlusions trapped therein; washing said paraxylene cake in a second zone of said separating unit, with approximately 0.4 to 1.2 parts by weight of washing liquid per part of paraxylene cake, said washing liquid comprising a main portion of a C5 hydrocarbon at C8 and a minor portion of dissolved paraxylene; gravitationally separating a substantial portion of the washing liquid effluent from the washed paraxylene cake, in a third zone of said separating unit; passing said washed paraxylene cake from the separator unit into a melting tank where the paraxylene cake is melted; passing said molten paraxylene to a fractionation tower where the trapped washing liquid is distilled and a paraxylene product having a purity greater than 99% is recovered.
