Abstract
A procedure for the preparation of disubstituted xanthone-carboxylic acid compounds selected from those represented by the formulas: **(See formula)** and its pharmaceutically acceptable, non-toxic esters, amides and salts, where each radical R is a group selected from those of the formula **(See formula)** where R2 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, substituted phenyl where the substituent is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl thio, trifluoromethyl or cyano, or a five or six membered monocyclic aromatic heterocyclic group in Total, one or two of which are selected from nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur, whose procedure consists of: 1) oxidizing a 5- or 7-alkylxanthone-2-carboxylic acid or its alkyl esters with chromium trioxide in acetic acid-acetic anhydride, optionally followed by hydrolysis to give the corresponding 5- or 7-acylxanthone-2-carboxylic acid or its alkyl esters and 2) optionally converting a product from step 1) to its pharmaceutically acceptable, non-toxic esters, amides and salts.
