Abstract
A process for preparing 1,1,1-trichloroethane comprising: (a) reacting ethylene and hydrogen chloride, where the hydrogen chloride is obtained in Another process step, in the presence of aluminum chloride catalyst to produce aluminum chloride ethyl; (b) reacting said ethyl chloride, recirculating ethyl chloride and 1,1,1-dichloroethane with chlorine at a temperature of 400º to 550ºC; (c) subjecting the reaction mixture from (b) to abrupt cooling with liquid, thus producing (1) a mixture of gaseous products comprising hydrogen chloride, vinyl chloride, and vinylidene chloride, and (2) a liquid product; (d) returning a relatively small proportion of said liquid product to the sudden cooling zone, mixing the remaining portion of said liquid product with the mixture of gaseous products formed in (c) (1), and subjecting the latter mixture to hydrochlorination. to form a second product mixture comprising hydrogen chloride, ethylene, ethyl chloride, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, 1,1-dichloroethane, cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene, 1,1,1- trichloroethane, ethylene dichloride, trichlorethylene, 1,1,2-trichloroethane and asymmetric tetrachloroethane; (e) separating hydrogen, ethylene chloride, ethyl chloride, vinyl chloride, and vinylidene chloride from said second product mixture; (f) separating from the remaining portion of said second mixture of 1,1-dichloroethane products and the cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene; (g) separating 1,1,1-trichloroethane from the portion that remains after the separation performed in (f).
