Abstract

A throttling apparatus for reducing the pressure of a circulating fluid with attenuation of noise and cavitation generated by the expansion of the fluid, comprising, in combination, a pressure reducing valve having a downstream face; means for attenuating the noise or cavitation generated by the expansion of the fluid circulating through said valve to a downstream pipe, said attenuation means comprising an at least partially conical tubular member provided between said valve and said downstream pipe, means of wire mesh forming sinuous passageways which span transversely and fit within said member, beginning substantially on said downstream face of said valve, said wire mesh means defining a series of juxtaposed cakes filling a section of said tubular member, each cited cake being composed of a series of perforated plates solidly joined to each other, each of said plates being formed by a lattice of interwoven wires, each lattice comprising a first flat transverse layer of parallel straight wires and a second transverse flat layer of parallel straight wires oriented s substantially at right angles to said first layer of transverse flat wire and welded thereto, the perforated plates of each of said cakes being arranged transversely such that their wire lattices are offset relative to those of the preceding and following plates in order to form said winding passages, thereby causing the fluid circulating through said tubular member to find and follow paths that are continuously wound around each successive flat plate and means to retain said cakes from the grid of wire in its cited juxtaposed assembly substantially applied to the face of the downstream valve on said tubular member, making open passages which are continuously wound through the mesh-forming lattice layers of the successively displaced plates of said cakes which said fluid undergoes maximum expansion completely through the entire cross section of said cakes under slightly open positions and also under totally open positions of said valve.
