Abstract

A method of recovering one or more metals from the group consisting of copper, silver, nickel, cobalt and zinc from a metal ore or metals containing sulfur and iron, which comprises between mixing the mineral and at least one amount stoichiometric nitric acid of a concentration of about 30 to 50% by volume, to form an aqueous acidic leavening solution thereof, heat the solution to a temperature equal to or higher than the melting point of the sulfur, at the same time as the solution is contained under pressure in a relatively inert atmosphere, controlling the temperature of the solution to substantially precipitate the iron content from the solution, relatively separating the iron precipitate from the acid-soluble phase of the solution, and recovering the metal content or metals of the acid-soluble phase.
