Process for the preparation of polynuclear aromatic polyamines by condensation of aromatic amines with formaldehyde in the presence of acidic aqueous catalysts, subsequent neutralization of the used catalyst and preparation known per se of the reaction mixture thus obtained, characterized in that the reaction mixture leaves the last condensation step, if necessary after partial neutralization of the used catalyst, however, before neutralization of the total amount of the used catalyst, free amine is extracted by means of a hydrophobic solvent and by recycling the solvent phase containing amine thus formed in any arbitrary place before the last condensation stage is returned to the aqueous phase containing the catalyst.
