Abstract

A horizontal belt conveyor (2) is used to split a flow of flat and overlapping objects (5) into individual groups. Two heavy cables or chains (13) are suspended above the conveyor belt by means of pneumatic cylinders (9, 15). The brake cables (13) form an arc such that the lowest point is above the end of the conveyor (2). In order to produce a gap between the overlapping objects (5), the brake cables (13) are lowered so that, starting from the exit end (3), the overlapping objects are clamped against fixed guide rails. Thus by slightly increasing the amount of overlap, the flow can be separated into groups without stopping the conveyor belt (2).
