Abstract

An improved method for continuous seam welding of moving webs of sheet material, the method of which comprises the steps of: (a) directing at least one of the webs moving towards each other to form a convergent v between webs movement; (b) applying a force greater than 0 kg in a location contiguous to the point at which said moving bands overlap in intimate contact at the point of convergence; (c) directing an energy laser beam to said convergent v; and (d) focusing the laser beam substantially within the plane of symmetry and within a relatively narrow range of focal point positions that extend from essentially the point of convergence, to a point only in the downstream direction.
