Abstract

The device contains a rotor (5) which rotates in a housing (1) about a horizontal axis (2) and is fitted with tearing tools (4). At the distance (a) away from the impact circle (14) of the tearing tools there is a first anvil edge (26) which is part of a pressing wall (20). The pressing wall (20) lies in a plane which runs through the axis of the rotor and is inclined with respect to the vertical plane by 0 to 25 DEG . When comminuting cardboard boxes and large areas of cardboard difficulties often arise because these materials have the tendency to build up above the rotor in a vault-like shape at the side walls of the housing chamber and to form a bridge of material as a result of which the supply to the rotor is blocked. In order to destroy these material bridges, the pressing wall (20) can be pivoted between the position shown and a horizontal position, a second anvil edge (27) protruding, in the horizontal position of the pressing wall, as far as the aforesaid distance (a) towards the impact circle (14) of the tearing tools (4).
