Abstract

A machine for making ice cubes comprises a tray containing a horizontal evaporator, inverted receptacles (10) of rectangular cross- section into which water is sprayed under low pressure from rotating nozzles (26), and a peripheral drainage trough 13. The water jets align with slots (15<1>, 15<11>) in a sloping tray (15) onto which the ice cubes fall to allow the water to pan. The evaporator pipe (11) is welded to the upper regions of the walls of the receptacles (10) and is zig-zagged around the receptacles which are arranged in rows and columns. The underside of the tray is formed of thermally insulating material (12) having openings defining the lower open ends of the receptacles. A supplementary condenser (19<1>) is included in the refrigeration circuit inside a water reservoir (19), hot water from which is used to defrost the evaporator and release the ice cubes therefrom at the end of an ice cube making cycle. Water which is not frozen into the receptacles drops down into a collector (28) from which it is recirculated via a pump (31) and ducting (23, 24) to the nozzles.
