Abstract
Acrylonitrile polymers contg. 0.5-10 moles % - CONOH gp gps. bound to the carbon chain, w.r.t. nitrile gps. are prepd. by adding a hydroxylamine salt and a base or free hydroxylamine to a soln. of an acrylonitrile polymer in an organic solvent. The soln. is then heated for is not 10 mins. at is not 50 degrees C. After a shaping process the material is treated with acid and possibly complexed with a metallic salt. The hydroxylamine salt is pref. the chlorhydrate, or the sulphate, and the base is pref. triethylene diamine. The acid is pref. H2SO4, and the acid treatment is pref. executed in the presence of a hydroxylamine salt. The metallic salt is pref. KMnO4, ZnSO4 or SnCl2. Such acrylonitrile polymers have low combustibility. The absence of halogenenated or phosphorated cpds. results in no toxic gases being liberated in a flame. The polymers can be spun into filaments whose structure is preserved in a flame, or used in moulding compsns.
