Abstract

Procedure for obtaining paper, with high dry strength and low wet strength, treating the surface of the paper with water-soluble salts of polymers based on ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, characterized in that it comprises the steps of polymerizing from 90 to 30% by weight of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid; from 10 to 70% by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide and/or methacrylamide; as well as, if appropriate, up to 30% by weight of an acrylic acid ester or methacrylic acid; and applying the resulting polymers to the surface of the paper in the form of water-soluble alkaline and/or alkaline-earth salts, which in 2% aqueous solution at a temperature of 20ºC have a viscosity of 5 to 100 mPas (Brookfield viscometer, 20 revolutions per minute ), in an amount of 1 to 4% by weight, in each case based on the solids.
